Poppy – The Ghost Hunter of Dunster is a fully illustrated, A4-sized hardcover book that follows a bubbly little sausage dog named Poppy as she explores Dunster village in search of ghosts.
While the story is inspired by ghost tales collected by author Nina Dodd for her 2023 book Witches, Giants and a Ghost Cat, this children’s book has been written and illustrated specifically for young readers aged 4 to 10.
The story and illustrations are not scary; instead, they focus on fun and interactive adventure, inviting readers to help little Poppy spot ghosts hidden throughout the pages.
Beyond being a whimsical tour of Dunster, the book carries a gentle message of acceptance and love—reminding us that it's okay to be different. The two main characters, Poppy and her brother Peanut, are complete opposites: Poppy dashes from one adventure to the next, while Peanut prefers to stay home and watch telly with his human mommy. Yet, after a day full of excitement, Poppy is always happy to return to her beloved brother. As Poppy says: “We certainly are all different... but it’s wonderful to be back home.”

Witches, Giants and a Ghost Cat is a fantastic read for anyone interested in English superstitions, ghost stories, folklore, and history. Centuries-old beliefs and historical events are interwoven with real-life examples discovered in Dunster—a quintessential English village often described as one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the UK.
Interestingly, not all of Dunster’s stories are rooted in the distant past. Recent surveys show that nearly half of the British population believes in ghosts, so it’s no surprise that new encounters continue to emerge and are readily shared among the like-minded.
This book can be enjoyed as a compelling collection of English tales and superstitions, but it also serves as a thrilling walking companion to the beautiful village of Dunster, located on the northern edge of Exmoor National Park.
